Happy (almost) birthday, Baby!

Wow. Where to start?

Today is the anniversary of the day that was supposed to be Simon's birthday. Our favorite midwife, Shannon, wasn't working that Monday so we moved the date of my cesarean to Tuesday, March 4, 2008, so Shannon would be there to be with us in the operating room with Dr. Kaminski to welcome our baby boy into the world. It seemed fitting also that Simon would be born on his brother's original estimated due date. We had looked forward to March 4, 2006, as the day around which we would become first time parents, never expecting for two full weeks to pass after that date before Jesse came to be with us.

It's hard to believe an entire year has passed since Simon's birth. It has been the fastest year of my life. Time started flying once we became parents, but the two years it was just Dan and me and Jesse definitely passed much slower than the time does when you've got two little ones to chase after. What a year it's been though! Simon is so different from Jesse. He's changed my few expectations over and over, teaching me - yet again - that I am no longer in charge and life is better when I follow the lead of my children.

I still carry many scars from Jesse's birth. It's not something that I will ever "get over" and move on from. I changed too much over the course of those three days of labor and I have yet to completely face my feelings regarding his entrance into the world. But I started my path to healing on the day Simon came to be.

Leading up to Simon's birth was agonizing. I had many fears. Would he cry? Would his lungs work? What if some freak accident happened and we came close to losing another baby? Would I be able to handle more? What if he ended up in the NICU like Jesse did? How would we make that work, could I go back to the NICU again without all those memories of Jesse's start rushing back in?

And then he was born. And he cried. And it was as though the sun was rising for the first time. Everything was going to be ok. I was going to be ok. I wasn't going to be defined by Jesse's birth anymore. It wasn't going to have the same hold on me that it did before. It's still there, still a part of who I am, nothing will change it. But Simon's birth lifted a fog of sorts that I had been in for almost two years. It was a new beginning.

And here we are one day away from the anniversary of that date. Simon joined our family one year ago. How can that be? It seems he was only born a few short months ago and it seems we've known him forever at the same time.

He's my chunky, lovable, adorable boy. I love his dark eyes and light, wispy hair. His whispering "dat dat dat" and light squeals welcome me every morning, reminding me that I am beyond blessed with yet another gorgeous boy to love and hold. Even overnight when I am exhausted from nursing every few hours, I thank God for the warm little body snuggled up against mine, his grunty little sounds as he feverishly sucks for more milk, his sweet smelling head and little chubby fingers holding tight to mine. I have been blessed with the most precious gift again.

In one year, Simon has gone from being a skinny little spider monkey with long chicken legs to a solid big guy who steals hearts wherever he goes. In his early days, when I was convinced he'd never latch to nurse and I was pumping and finger feeding him with a syringe, barely sleeping, frustrated, exhausted, discouraged... I never looked forward far enough to see where we'd be today. I plugged through one minute, one hour, one day at a time never realizing a year later he'd be a happy, healthy, beautiful boy, fed for 9 months exclusively by my milk, passionate to see me at the end of a work day to reconnect, content to lie snuggled against me as he sleeps.

Simon, you are my precious boy. I love you more than I can ever express in words. You've turned my life upside down again in a good way. You're a joy to be with. A pleasure to mother. My life is complete with you in it. You are my second born, but you are never second in my heart. I love you, Bubba. Happy birthday.

Party at my crib!

You know those onesies that read "Party at my crib - 3:00 am"? Simon needs a few. Except they need to read "Party in my mom's bed - 3-???" He's killing me!

It's not the night wakings. I can handle night wakings. Night wakings are part of the reason my babies sleep in bed with me. They wake, I roll over, we nurse, we both fall back to sleep. Night wakings are no big deal. Jesse schooled me in Night Wakings 101, 102, 105 and 109. That kid didn't sleep through the night until he was 18.5 months old. Yes, 18.5 months. And that's ok. I am fine with letting them do things in their own time.

Simon, however, isn't waking to nurse and then falling back to sleep. Well, I lie, he does do that around 10:30, midnight, maybe another one around 1:30 or 2. But around the 3:30/4:00 timeframe, he wakes up and he's ready to party! He's cooing, he's giggling, he's kicking and covering his face with his burp rag and waving his arms all around... And he is in no mood to go back to sleep.

I am a Mama Zombie. Disheveled hair, dark circles under my eyes, new lines forming every day, that flat look in my eyes, stumbling along, incoherently mumbling and moaning. Very scary!

A few of these tossed in now and then aren't too bad. He's a baby. Babies don't stick to schedules. Babies don't know that I have two major accounts to reconcile tomorrow or that my older child wanted 28 books read to him before bed and didn't go down until 11:56 pm. Babies don't know that I haven't had a decent night's sleep in almost 3 years! So it's ok when he does this now and then. We all have bad nights.

These aren't every now and then though. Simon is consistently waking up ready to jam! The kicker is that he will CRASH and fall into the deepest, heavenly, sleeping like a baby sleep either 3 minutes before my alarm goes off for the day or 10 minutes after. Then he'll sleep all morning long!

Two nights ago he was up for 1.5 hours and I had to get into the shower. So I got Dan to take him so he wouldn't cry while I was showering. 7 minutes later I emerge from the shower to find Dan rocking a precious slumbering baby. Aw, how sweet!

Last night, up at 3:30. By 4:45 I couldn't take it anymore. I woke Dan up to take him. He brought him back at 5. Seriously? He said he was hungry. Um, no, he ate from 3:30 to 4:30. He is most definitely not hungry! I made Dan take him back. At 5:32 he brought him back. Simon was sleeping. Hard. Yeah, my alarm was set for 5:35.

Someone shoot me.

Baby Love

You know, just as a little splurge for myself and to help me hone in on what's really important...

This morning Simon wouldn't sleep. He woke around 2:30 ready to rock 'n roll. He's been doing this lately. It's hard to handle at times since I've gotten used to sleeping more than I did when Jesse was a baby. With Jesse, no one slept. Simon's been decent thus far though so when he stopped sleeping well and started all this night waking it was slightly hard to accept at first.

But I digress. Anyway, after about an hour of nursing, shushing and otherwise trying to get him back to sleep I decided just to enjoy the awake time with him. He does this little soft cooing thing in the mornings and I am able to kiss him softly on his mouth, nose, ears, forehead, eyes, shoulders, wrists, wherever and he lies there silently with his eyes closed, softly smiling and cooing while I just kiss and kiss and kiss. The morning shortly after he's woken for the day is usually the only time I can ever do this. Well, around quarter to four this morning I kissed him since he wasn't going back to sleep and he closed his eyes and laid very still. So I kissed him again and he did his little coo. Oh, the game was on! I kissed and kissed and kissed... and he fell back to sleep! Such a sweet boy he is.

Of course, 10 minutes after I fell back to sleep he was up kicking me again. That's ok. This time I just went and got Daddy to take him downstairs to rock him for a while.

Next time he wakes overnight I am just going to enjoy the extra time with him rather than getting frustrated that I am missing out on precious sleep time. Our time together is precious too, no matter when it happens.

I want to go home and snuggle that soft, fuzzy head right now! Three hours to go.
